Trips an Excursions
The excursion starts off aboard a "curiara" (canoe), a 5 minute trip the Sapo port. We proceed with a walk
along the fall for a view of the water curtain. From there you can also observe the "sabana" and the "tepuys"
in the distance. We continue walking down the side of the fall, through a jungle trek, to the entrance of the
galleries formed behind the fall where you experience the spectacular water curtain from behind. We walk to
the other end, climb to the top and enjoy the landscape. Then, we retrace our steps, walk back out through
the galleries, and continue downwards to the lowest point of the fall, where a beach spreads out to one side
of the Sapo Falls. We take a rest, enjoy the landscape, and bathe in the fresh waters. We climb back and return
to the top of the fall, and head back aboard the "curiara".
Departing from the camp, up the Carrao River, just minutes away we reach the narrow Moroco river, to observe
the fauna and diversity of the vegetation, such as the "sabana", "morichales" and forests. There is the opportunity
to visit indigenous hamlets. This is the ideal place for bird-watching, specially in the early morning hours or
the afternoons; it's an ideal excursion for nature lovers.
A 20 minute trip up the Carrao River to arrive at Mayupa. From there, the Auyantepuy can be observed. A stop
at a beautiful pink-quartz sand beach, where you not only enjoy the sand, but a pleasant dip in the reddish
waters of the Carrao as well; all the while contemplating the grandiosity of the landscape. On the way back,
a visit to Francisco Montes de Oca's hamlet, a native of the zone, witness to the first settlements in Canaima,
and the story of Jimmy Angel. His family manufactures the typical handcrafts which sell as souvenirs.
