Camp: Ucaima Description


* Location 
Canaima national park, on the Carrao River.

* How to get there 
By air to Canaima. From there, land transfer to the embarkation point some 10 minutes away, then a crossing of about 15 minutes in dug-out canoe to the camp on the banks of the Carrao River.

* Introduction

To the North of the Parque Nacional Canaima (Canaima National Park) in the Bolívar State, two kilometers away from the famous Laguna de Canaima (Canaima Lagoon), on the edge of the Carrao River, you’ll find the marvelous tourist jungle camp site established in 1956 by the legendary Rudolf Truffino, also know as JUNGLE RUDY, who, enchanted by the beauty of the region, decided to settle there with his wife, and reveal to millions around the world the pristine secrets and monuments of nature. He named the small camp UCAIMA, a word of Pemon origin that means: “what lures.”

Today, the family tradition continues in care of his daughters, for the enjoyment of the visiting tourists, since its beginning and for the times to come.
So, be one of the chosen few and come witness the beauty that only UCAIMA can offer… You’ll never be the same!

The camp comprises 5 beautiful “cabañas” with comfortable bedrooms: 10 double, 2 triple and 2 single; private bath, balcony with “hamaca” (hammock), excellent ventilation, and surrounded by the unique natural scenery

* Characteristics 
This camp was one of the pioneers in adventure tourism in the country and many people know it by the name Rudy's Jungle, in honor of its founder.
Visitors are attended to by the family of the legendary Rudy Truffino. It is located on the banks of the Carrao River, where you can enjoy a refreshing dip as well as the tranquility and privacy the camp offers. The surrounding landscaped consists of savannah and jungle, typical of the Gran Sabana, with its imposing tepuis in the distance. Diverse half-day excursions are offered to different falls such as Mayupa, El Sapo, El Hacha, Sabanero, and the Moroco River. Visits to indigenous communities and to obtain handicrafts from them. Price includes lodging in double room, land and river transfers between airport-camp, all meals, welcome cocktail, and
excursion to Salto El Sapo.

* Recomendations 
It is necessary to bring identification documents, cédula or passport, light clothing appropriate for the climate and excursions, sweater for the evenings, bathing suit sun screen, mosquito repellent, hat or cap, shoes than can get wet (or 2 pairs of sneakers), camera, flashlight, binoculars, etc.

* Facilities 
This camp, with a maximum capacity of 26, has 4 cabins with 6 double rooms, 4 triples and 1 matrimonial. Each room has fans, private bathroom, and a small porch with hammocks. The central house has restaurant and bar, where breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served with typical Venezuelan meat, fish, salads, etc.

We have a panoramic dining-room with the best gastronomical service of typical, national and international cuisine. Our charming Salon-Bar is a pleasant area for group meetings. The Mirador Salon is specially designed to enjoy the landscape and for meditation. Our camping site offers first class service and attention, good taste, comfort, privacy and an unpretentious environment; highly trained and experienced personnel for the enjoyment and satisfaction of our visitors.

The camp comprises 5 beautiful "cabañas" with comfortable bedrooms: 10 double, 2 triple and 2 single; private bath, balcony with "hamaca" (hammock), excellent ventilation, and surrounded by the unique natural scenery. Children pay Full Rate for private plane trips.Children under 10 pay 50% for lodging and excursions.
Children under 6 are not allowed on river excursions, unless a written letter of parent authorization assuming the responsibility is handed to park authorities as required by Imparques.
Overnight excursions in the jungle are not advised for the aged with physical and/or health problems.
Our prices do not include tax for lodgings.

Drinks are not included within the camp.
If the passenger refuses our services once in Canaima, there will be no refunds whatsoever.
We will not be responsible for any excursion outside of our services, nor for any damage
caused to photographic equipment that might occur during the stay or excursions.

You have the option to enjoy a series of excursions with visits to El Sapo Falls and its impressive caves. Trips up the Carrao River in "curiaras" (indigenous canoes) from which the majestic "Tepuys" can be fully appreciated, as well as the Mayupa landscape, the beauty of the Pozo de la Felicidad (The Pool of Hapiness) with its crystal-clear waters, and the Orquídea Island's (Orquid Island) impressive view of the Auyantepuy.
For a greater adventure, we will have excursions to the foot of the Angel Falls in which you will enjoy an excellent trip up the Carrao and Churún rivers, passing through numberless rapids, and walks in contact with nature.
We also offer an excellent overnight refuge where you will have a full-view of the Angels Falls.
There is also the option of reconnaissance fly-overs of Canaima zones, the Auyantepuy and, of course, the Angel Falls. We also offer an enchanting visit to Kavac, walking through its galleries under the cold water curtains, and a climb to the top of this beautiful waterfall.

Trips an Excursions
The excursion starts off aboard a "curiara" (canoe), a 5 minute trip the Sapo port. We proceed with a walk along the fall for a view of the water curtain. From there you can also observe the "sabana" and the "tepuys" in the distance. We continue walking down the side of the fall, through a jungle trek, to the entrance of the
galleries formed behind the fall where you experience the spectacular water curtain from behind. We walk to the other end, climb to the top and enjoy the landscape. Then, we retrace our steps, walk back out through the galleries, and continue downwards to the lowest point of the fall, where a beach spreads out to one side
of the Sapo Falls. We take a rest, enjoy the landscape, and bathe in the fresh waters. We climb back and return to the top of the fall, and head back aboard the "curiara".
Departing from the camp, up the Carrao River, just minutes away we reach the narrow Moroco river, to observe the fauna and diversity of the vegetation, such as the "sabana", "morichales" and forests. There is the opportunity to visit indigenous hamlets. This is the ideal place for bird-watching, specially in the early morning hours or the afternoons; it's an ideal excursion for nature lovers.
A 20 minute trip up the Carrao River to arrive at Mayupa. From there, the Auyantepuy can be observed. A stop at a beautiful pink-quartz sand beach, where you not only enjoy the sand, but a pleasant dip in the reddish waters of the Carrao as well; all the while contemplating the grandiosity of the landscape. On the way back, a visit to Francisco Montes de Oca's hamlet, a native of the zone, witness to the first settlements in Canaima, and the story of Jimmy Angel. His family manufactures the typical handcrafts which sell as souvenirs. Salto El Sapo (El Sapo Falls)

An early departure from the camp, for a 15 min. trip aboard a "curiara" (canoe), up the Carrao River to the Mayupa zone. Then, a 30 min. walk through the "sabana" while the canoe climbs the rapids. We continue walking up river, past the Arautaima rapids, to continue sailing up river for about 45 min. more, till we reach
the Pozo de la Felicidad, making a stop to enjoy the falls and bathe in the crystal-clear waters. Another 45 min. up river, as we contemplate, from a short distance, the Auyantepuy plateau in all its vastness, to reach Orquid
Island, which is located in the Aonda zone. We'll disembark and walk around the zone to observe first-hand
the natural diversity that the island is home to. We can bathe in the river waters and rest, and then enjoy an exquisite "pollo en vara" (chicken barbecue). After resting a while, we head back to the camp.
Leaving the camp aboard a "curiara", on a 5 min. trip up the Carrao River to the Mayupa zone. A 30 min. walk along the "saban" while the canoe climbs the rapids. After crossing the rapids we continue navigating for 45 min. to reach the Pozo de la Felicidad. During the canoe ride we'll be able to contemplate the Auyantepey
plateau and the jungle from a short distance. Once at the pool and its beautiful waterfall, we can bathe in the crystal clear-waters and enjoy, for an hour or so, the tranquility and the beauty of the natural surroundings.
Departing from the camp aboard a "curiara" to Ucaima port from where the trip will continue by Jeep (4x4) to reach the Canaima village, and on across the "sabana" to observe the falls at the Canaima lagoon and the "tepuys" in the distance. Reaching Puerto Verde, we take a short walk to the edge of the Carrao River and
proceed aboard a "curiara" down river for about 30 min. We will arrive near the top of the Yuri Falls; walk through the jungle to reach the Yuri-lu Fall, which seems to spring from the jungle with its cold, crystal waters.
You can bathe in these waters. The walk continues for another 15 min. arriving at the beach with its view of the Yuri falls. We can rest and enjoy the nature from the wide, pink-sand beaches, while bathing in the reddish waters of the Carrao river. Return to camp. Isla Orquídea* (Orquid Island)

Trips an Excursions
Day 1: Departure is at 9:00 am, aboard a "curiara" up-river to Mayupa where we will take a 30 min. walk. We board the "curiara" again to sail up-river. A stop at the Pozo de la Felicidad for a short dip in the water, to continue onto the Aonda zone and Orquid Island. As we cross the Aonda rapids we will enter the Churún River, through countless rapids. A short stop on the river-side to have lunch and enjoy a bath. As we continue up-river we will arrive to the Salto refuge, at approximately 4:00 pm.
There will be plenty of time to bathe and contemplate the sunset. For dinner, roast meat cooked over fire-wood, as we chat about the local history.
Day 2: Breakfast at 7:00 am, then for a walk of about 1 hour up a steep natural trek of roots and rocks.Reaching Mirador Laime, which is a huge rock that sprouts from the jungle, we will witness a view of the Auyantepui and Angel fall. we will rest for awhile and then go for walk to reach the of the fall, where (if the water
level allow it) we could deep pool. Take a bath in cold waters, we will take a worth rest after then strong walk and then we will return of the refuge, we will have exquisite chicken barbecue for lunch, we rest until 2:30 pm.
than it begins our return to the camp.
Departing at 5:00 am. aboard a "curiara up-river to Mayupa, where we take a 30 min. break to walk and continue up-river past the Pozo de la Felicidad onto Orquid Island. We stop for breakfast, and continue onto the Aonda
rapids, to then enter the Churún River, meeting countless rapids again, all the while with a grand view of the majestic Auyantepuy, from different angles, making it possible to observe its changing hues and impressive formations. Once at the refuge, around 11:00 am, we will take a 1 hour walk up the steep jungle slopes, through
a natural path among roots and rocks. We will arrive to the Mirador Laime (Mirador Salto Angel) which is a huge rock that sprouts from the jungle, lending a spectacular panorama of the mysterious Auyantepuy and the Angel Falls in all its splendor. We will take a rest to continue onto the fall's pool where (if the water level allows) we
can bathe in its chilly waters. After the long walk, we will take a good rest and return to the refuge, where an exquisite chicken barbecue will be awaiting. At 2:30 pm, after a nice rest, we will head back for the camp.Angel Falls*

Flying over the "sabana" and the "tepuys" (plateaus) to reach the "Cañón del Diablo" (Devil's Canyon) where the plane will circle over to observe
the spectacular grandiosity and the beauty of the Angel Falls, as well as the millenary and majestic Auyantepuy. This, of course, depending on the zone's atmospheric conditions. Angel Falls Fly Over

Plane Excursions
Leaving Canaima airport aboard a single engine Cessna 206 aircraft with a capacity for 5 people, a 30 minute flight to reach the Kamarata valley zone, south-east of the Auyantepuy. Landing on an airstrip, we will reach an indigenous settlement called Kavac. The indigenous guides, native to the zone, will take us to the depths of the cave where a 100 m. fall springs forth from a 200 m. sulcated rock crevice shaped by the river itself for millions of years. The journey will be on foot, among the
rocks and the stream, dipping into the water and resting among the stones. This part of the journey will last for 2 hours. Then, we head back to the indigenous village, and enjoy a chicken barbecue lunch. There will be an opportunity to rest or walk around the village, or to buy the typical crafts of the zone. We board the plane and head back, with a short detour to fly over the Angel Falls and the Auyantepuy. Back to Canaima.Kavac Fly Over
