Circuits:Los Andes Trekking Circuits

Los Andes The pre-Colombian peoples of the Andes passed down a beautiful explanation for the snow on the five highest peaks of the Venezuelan cordillera that seemed to remain frozen in defiance of the hot sun that warms the lush green valley of Mérida and Mucuchíes. According to the account, five giant white eagles were perched majestically on top of the peaks, arousing the intense curiosity of Caribay the daughter of the Sun and the Moon. Against the counsel of the village elders, she set out for their perches, determined to see for herself the splendor of their brilliant white plumage. Up and up she climbed, until finally she reached the great birds. But as she extended her hand to grab a feather, the eagles began to screech and flap their wings in a fury. Feathers rained down over the 5 peaks and she fled, not stopping until she reached the valley once again. Upon looking back, she found the five white eagles had disappeared. The only trace they left was the beautiful layer of brilliant white feathers that now caps the top of our great Andean mountain range.

PARAMO TOUR (GRADE I, 1 day) The word "paramo" translates to "moor" in English and refers to the tropical sub-alpine ecosystems found in the highlands of Central and South America. This region is largely defined by its altitude, generally ranging from 3200 m up to 4300 m. Its beauty lies in its sparsness, its open, windswept terrain, and in its contemplative silence. The valley walls are covered with the velvety-tufted frailejon plant that, if left undisturbed for eighty to ninety years, can reach heights of three meters. You'll walk through the cobble-stone streets of white-washed, clay-brick villages and hike up to a crystal clear glacial lake that reflect the landscape like a mirror. You will visit a biological research station where parks officials manage an Andean re-introduction program. You will also journey to Los Frailes, an antique colonial mission of the 17th century, and to Pico Aguila (4125 meters), the highest point in Venezuela reachable by car.

LOS NEVADOS (Grade II, 3 days / 2 nights) This farming settlement is nestled high up in the Valley of the Indians, a challenging place to get to by jeep or foot. Foreigners and Venezuelans alike marvel at the dusty self-sufficiency of this humble town. Los Nevados offers a warm welcome and a glimpse into the past. You will journey by jeep--easier said than done--all the while treated to views of the highest peaks of the Andes. A night at one of the family-style "posadas" energizes you for a journey, by mule, to Alto de la Cruz, a pass that strides both sides of the mountain range. The mule trek offers you a view of both the valley you have just ascended and a hazy Mérida almost lost in the depths below. Backpacking and camping in the fresh mountain air is just as exhilarating as the hot springs and rainforest we trek through on the way back down to Mérida. Tour Description

HERMIT´S ROUTE (Grade III, 3 days / 2 nights) The name of this excursion is attributed to the popular craftsman Juan Felix Sanchez who, after living an adventurous life, decided to retire from civilization to an isolated páramo region where he constructed a beautiful chapel from stone on a site which was shown to him by a religious vision. Juan Felix Sanchez was also an able weaver and imaginative wood carver and one can find many of his carvings along the route to the chapel.

Tour Description KALEIDOSCOPE TOUR (Grade IV, 3 days/ 2 nights) We have called this Tour Kaleidoscope as it offers a chance to visit the many different ecosystems that the Venezuelan Andes have to offer. Tour Description SAN JOSÉ (Grade II, 2 days / 1 night; Grade II, 4 days/3 night) Up in the high reaches of the southern chain of the Venezuelan Andes lies the pueblo of San José. Home to a scant 30 souls and virtually inaccessible to the public, San José is a land forgotten by time. People still cook over wood fires, ground cornmeal with stones, and use mules to pull their plows. We base ourselves in an idyllic mountain chalet and dine on trout pulled out of the estate's manicured ponds. We hike, mountain bike, and ride on horses through a barrage of ecosystems, from cloudforested waterfalls to windswept moors to sun-parched deserts where a curious salt lake is said to have been filled with the tears of widows left behind in conquistadors' wake. We will also visit both a sugarcane, and a coffee plantation. The centuries-old plantations continue to operate in the colonial style. may choose to finish the adventure with an optional paragliding flight and take the falcons' route back down to the valey floor. Tour Descriptions "The coffee plantation is gorgeous, right out of Like Water for Chocolate. The chalet is located in a valley of Paradise and you really can't imagine how beautiful it is and how nice the family is you'll never forget Martin's smile and his food is the best in Venezuela.(...) I can't recommend this company or particular tour enough. You are in very good, capable hands." Lynda and Matt, London, UK

LA CULATA (Grade II, 3 days / 2 nights) Opposite the Sierra Nevada we find a parallel and slightly lower chain of mountains called La Culata. Like the paramo, La Culata treats hikers to vast, windswept vistas across a treeless terrain. Many endangered species live in La Culata. Enormous condors soar over the La Culata peaks on lofty three-and-a-half meter wingspans. These ridges explode with a massive variety of wildflowers. you'll spend three full days following magnificent waterfalls and velvety-topped frailejon plants. No mountaineering equipment is necessary for the ascent to the top of Pan de Azucar Peak (4747 meters). The view is impressive. A clear day will reward you with the sight of Lake Maracaibo to the north, and the entire Sierra Nevada range spreading out to the south. We'll ultimately make our way to an amazing mountain pool overlooking Pico Humboldt the pool is fed by two hot springs: one tepid and one piping hot. As the steam rises up around you, you can congratulate yourself on a rugged trek well-done. Tour Description "We spent three days hiking to Pico Pan de Azucar and the hot springs. Excellent. Beautiful scenery and an enjoyable climb. Very good equipment, and a brilliant guide. He even taught us some Spanish. The hot springs were lovely, a very good way to end the tour. Highly recommended, and Natoura was brilliant. Off to try their horse riding next!" Laura McLolvan and Milton Assey, Dorset, England PICO HUMBOLDT (GRADE IV, 4 days/3 nights) This climb goes up to Venezuela's second highest mountain at 4942 meters, which is just as impressive and arguably even more beautiful than its taller neighbor, Pico Bolívar. The climb to the top of Humbolt's broad, flat glacier, requires crampons and pick axes. This trip follows the same route as that of Pico Bolívar, passing through mysterious cloud forest, stark paramo (moor), and hauntingly quiet desert Páramo. The rope-and-harness ascent to the top challenges both your high-elevation mountaineering skills and you personal courage. The rewards are unforgettable. Tour Description "My 50th birthday was celebrated with Jose and "family" at Natoura Tours, having completed the most grueling and most rewarding trip of our lives to Pico Humboldt. José goes above and beyond to accommodate his guests, and our guide Guillermo and our porter Franklin were the most professional, most considerate and most enjoyable people we have ever had on a trip." David and Donna Frazza, Arizona, USA.

PICO BOLIVAR (GRADE IV, 5 days/4 nights) The route to the top of Pico Bolívar is both spectacular in its beauty and challenging in its ruggedness. The trail starts at La Mucuy, part of the Sierra Nevada National Park. The path winds its way up through dense, tropical cloud forest. Plants grow on plants, green upon green, and the lush vegetation erupts with birdsongs. On the three-day ascent to the base of Bolívar, you pass into "paramos" stark but beautiful moors, famous for the velvety "frailejón" plant indigenous to the tropical Andes. Then you hike over a desert paramo of stone and snow, camping every night on the shores of the biggest glacial lakes of the Venezuelan Andes. With the proper climbing equipment, you'll summit Pico Bolivar, a peak of 5007 meters, and gaze across political boundaries into Colombia. you'll descent from the mountains on the world's highest and longest cable car, which gives you one more unforgettable view of Mérida as it takes you back down the valley. Tour Description "Spectacular views and a fantastic experience. That was a great trip from the food down to the last piece of gear. Pico Bolivar is not for everyone. Its a rugged trip, but some of the finest backpacking I've ever done from California to Wyoming. Thanks to Daniel and Gabriel, our most excellent guides." Paul Peters, California,

USA PICO BOLIVAR (GRADE IV, 3 days / 2 nights) For those who do not have the time for the full excursion, but do maintain a strong resistance to altitude sickness, a faster route to the peak of Bolívar is available. Taking a ride on the world's highest and longest cable car to Loma Redonda (4000m) puts us within a day of the peak.Returning the same way makes this a short, 3 day trek.

MÉRIDA - BARINAS BY FOOT (Grade IV, 4 days/3 nights) Optional: an extra day will be recommended. Mérida's snow-capped Sierra Nevada buttress the highlands that separate Lake Maracaibo from the practically sea-level plains of Los Llanos. Most people think of the rocky rampart as an impenetrable wall only to be crossed by bus or plane. You, however, will explore it on foot. You trek over the mountain range and across two states, Mérida and Barinas. You will start in the moors in the small Andean village of Gavidia at 3500 meters, cross the paramos of the Andes and end up on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada at about 400 meters. You will cross through a number of beautiful well-preserved Andean villages, rainforests and valleys with breathtaking views of some of South Americans last paradises. You will sleep in tents or in farmers' houses, and enjoy spending time with local people in remote Andean hamlets completely cut off from civilization: no roads, no electricity, and surrounded only by the murmur of expansive wilderness.

Tour Description THE ULTIMATE TOUR (GRADE IV, 3 days/2 nights) This tour offers a lot of rough-and-tumble fun that is less of a tour and more of a journey. A mountain hike carries you up to Laguna Negra and through the Sierra Nevada mountains. You descend on a spectacular, 75 km mountain bike ride. In Barinitas, an idyllic village on the southern slopes of an Andean cloud forest, you settle down in the home of Victor and Vivian, where a typical Venezuelan dinner awaits you. A hike upriver is next on the program: a tough trip, pulling yourself up with a rope through little waterfalls, narrow paths, and rocky perches. Once on top, you soak in peaceful and soothing hot springs. Later, you'll spear your lunch right out of the water, receive valuable hammock training, and, after three full days, come roaring back into Mérida, on a rubber raft through 8 km of river rapids. "I would recommend this trip to anybody who wants to couple fun and excitement in a host of different environments and activities: mountain biking, white-water rafting, river crossings, hiking, harpoon fishing. . . all crammed into three days, led by interesting and knowledgeable guides and staying and eating with Venezuelan families in their homes. A great way to experience the delights of the people and the country firsthand." Graham Seed, London, UK Our Mountaineering Treks Due to the physical rigors and isolation implicit in a mountaineering excursion, we take our safety precautions very seriously. We use only the most reliable equipment and all our guides have years of experience exploring the various routes throughout the national parks. Natoura is also one of the few agencies to employ radios to remain in constant contact with both the park service and our home office in case of difficulties or unforeseen complications.
